Black Warrior Riverkeeper’s mission is to protect and restore the Black Warrior River and its tributaries. We are a citizen-based nonprofit organization dedicated to improving water quality, habitat, recreation, and public health throughout our patrol area, the Black Warrior River watershed.

The Black Warrior water is a large, aquatic, nocturnal salamander that permanently retains a larval form and external gills throughout its life. This species has been proposed for listing as Endangered and is only found in streams within the Black Warrior River Basin in Alabama.

The Black Warrior River is a waterway in west-central Alabama in the southeastern United States. The river rises in the extreme southern edges of the Appalachian Highlands and flows 178 miles (286 km) to the Tombigbee River, of which the Black Warrior is the primary tributary.
